NVIDIA announced that BGI, the world's largest genomics institute, has slashed the time to analyze batches of DNA sequencing data from nearly four days to just six hours using a NVIDIA Tesla GPU-based server farm. The speed up is considered a critically important step in determining, in an affordable manner, the chemical building blocks that make up a DNA molecule. This is key for the genomics industry to achieve its target of the $1,000 genome -- the point at which genomics can be used in clinical diagnostic tests as a practical component of patient care. "We are drowning in the genome data that our high-throughput sequencing machines create every day," said Dr. Bingqiang Wang, head of high performance computing from…
Red Hat announced that Pattern Energy Group LP, a leading independent wind energy and transmission company, is using Red Hat Storage, formerly Gluster, technology to manage business-critical weather prediction data. Pattern Energy identifies opportunities in the renewable energy sector, creating and implementing plans to convert opportunities into operating assets. Pattern Energy chose Red Hat Storage Software Appliance for high-performance, highly reliable and scalable storage. "Our business is based on a technology that produces a large amount of data, requiring constant uptime in order to monitor and produce wind and energy estimates," said Chad Ringley, manager of atmospheric modeling at Pattern Energy. "With the way we're using the system now, it's supporting our day-to-day operations, meeting time constraints and allowing forecasts…
Coraid announced that Premier Health Care Services has implemented Coraid EtherDrive Ethernet SAN and VMware solutions to virtualize and consolidate its IT infrastructure for efficiency, agility and data protection. Premier is an Emergency Medicine Physician Group based in Dayton, Ohio, which partners with hospitals to improve the quality and delivery of emergency-department patient care. Established in 1987, Premier is one of the leading and most respected providers of physician services in the greater Midwest and Southeast. "We were running out of storage space and needed to replace our existing Fibre Channel storage system with a solution that would accommodate our growth of data, support our VMware server virtualization efforts, improve storage performance and simplify our SAN environment," said Steve Brown,…
