With the current data explosion and focus on big data analytics across a range of sectors including technology, Web 2.0, banking, government and entertainment, companies in these sectors are adopting Hadoop at an exponential rate to achieve their business goals. However, as more and more businesses deploy Hadoop clusters, it is becoming increasingly evident that traditional approaches are no longer capable of delivering the performance that is needed to enable the application to process massive data at extreme speeds and to meet their economics and scalability goals. Join experts from Dell, Mellanox and AMD for a webinar to learn: • How to lower risk and speed time to product with Dell Apache Hadoop solutions • Key considerations and issues to…
In 2012 CSCS will move from its actual location in Manno to the nearby city of Lugano. The geographical distance between the current and the future location is about 3 km, the measured distance of dark fiber is 10km. CSCS evaluated the Obsidian Longbow InfiniBand Range Extender with the overall goal to ensure continuous availability of GPFS through the complete CSCS relocation period by running one single GPFS file system over both sites. InfiniBand Fabrics are designed to serve the needs of HPC computing and HPC storage. The increase in distribution of computational workloads to sites in different locations and also the ongoing trend for infrastructure consolidation at large research sites creates the necessity to investigate in alternatives to Fiber…
Office of Science awards almost 1.7 billion supercomputing hours Legend has it that Prometheus brought us the gift of fire – a gift of comfort, innovation and even inspiration. Researchers in the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Science are dedicated to passing on those gifts, especially through the Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program. The INCITE program is the major means by which the scientific community gains access to some of the nation's fastest supercomputers. Today, it announced awards of nearly 1.7 billion processor hours to 60 high-impact research projects which will address scientific and engineering challenges of national and global importance. For instance: A total of 40 million processor hours was awarded to…
Carnegie Mellon University engineering and computer science students are using their competitive skills to rack up global victories as members of CMU's "Capture the Flag" team. Capture the Flag (CTF) is a computer security war game in which each participating team or individual competes to find a key source of information by solving a litany of challenges. In the last four weeks, the CMU CTF team has won two prestigious contests. On Oct. 24 they won the SecuInside CTF contest in South Korea, winning $30,000. Last week, they entered two teams at the Polytechnic Institute of New York (NYU-Poly) CSAW contest and took first- and second-place, netting another $1,750. "The SecuInside contest was an attack-defense competition, so our goal was…
Mellanox Accelerates Half of the World’s Petaflops Systems; Delivers Scalable Networking for Next Generation Supercomputers Mellanox Technologies has continued its command as the leading global interconnect solution provider for the TOP500 list of supercomputers. For the first time, the November 2011 TOP500 list includes FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand-based systems, all based on Mellanox interconnect solutions. Mellanox FDR InfiniBand-connected systems demonstrate the highest x86 clustering efficiency, delivering the highest performance per node. According to the list, InfiniBand-connected systems grew at a CAGR of 15 percent from 2008-2011, connecting and delivering leading performance and efficiency to 210 supercomputers, closing the gap with the 224 Ethernet-based clusters on the list. Mellanox’s scalable interconnect solutions accelerate all five of the InfiniBand-based Petascale systems on the…
