THIS YEARS STORIES

Shell has launched a two-day Innovation Summit at the recently expanded Shell Technology Center in Houston. The event brings Shell business and technology leaders together with cross-sector experts to explore how collaboration, particularly among unusual partners, can generate innovative thinking and new ideas on complex societal issues, such as the increasing stress among food, water and energy."Shell has spent over a billion dollars a year on researching and developing new technologies - more than any of our peers. This investment in innovation and a consistent commitment to collaboration are essential to spark new ideas and develop solutions to today's and tomorrow's challenges," said Matthias Bichsel, director of Projects & Technology at Royal Dutch Shell. "They are the keys to delivering…
Berndt Mueller to take the helm advancing the frontiers of the Lab’s physics programsNuclear physicist Berndt Mueller has joined the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory as the new Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Nuclear & Particle Physics (NPP), effective January 1, 2013. Mueller brings world-class experience as both a scientist and a manager of major research initiatives to this key leadership position at Brookhaven Lab."I am both honored and thrilled by the opportunity to lead Brookhaven Lab's nuclear and particle physics research at a time that is rife with both opportunities and challenges,” Mueller said.Mueller, an active scientist with more than 300 peer-reviewed publications with 9,000-plus citations, is James B. Duke Professor and Director of the Center for…
Berkeley Lab-based Supernova Cosmology Project uses Hubble Space Telescope data to discover the most distant well-measured Type Ia supernova ever found What if you had a "Wayback Television Set" and could watch an entire month of ancient prehistory unfold before your eyes in real time? David Rubin of the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) presented just such a scenario to the American Astronomical Society (AAS) meeting in Long Beach, CA, when he announced the discovery of a striking astronomical object: a Type Ia supernova with a redshift of 1.71 that dates back 10 billion years in time. Labeled SN SCP-0401, the supernova is exceptional for its detailed spectrum and precision color measurement, unprecedented in a…
Northwest Institute for Advanced Computing seeks solutions to real-world problemsThe deluge of data coming from today's countless electronic devices will be harnessed to take on the most pressing problems facing science and society at a new computational institute in Seattle. The Northwest Institute for Advanced Computing is being formed by the University of Washington and the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash. Researchers associated with the institute will work to ensure the next generation of supercomputers and the methods used to run them can address challenges ranging from climate change to energy management."Computing has transformed science, engineering and society in remarkable ways," said Doug Ray, associate director of PNNL's Fundamental & Computational Sciences Directorate. "But as huge…
Features, like Rogue Wave’s ReplayEngine, can decrease debugging time by an average of 26%According to recent research conducted at the University of Cambridge, the failure of organizations to adopt reverse debugging tools costs the economy $41 billion dollars of annual programming time. Researchers at the University of Cambridge’s Judge Business School conducted a survey which found that when respondents used advanced reverse debugging tools, they spent an average of 26% less time on debugging. Specifically, the time fixing bugs decreased from 25% to 18% and reworking code decreased from 25% to 19% while using reverse debuggers. This means that reverse debuggers have the potential to save 13% of total programming time, which translates to $41 billion dollars of savings to…
