THIS YEARS STORIES

In a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, the National Institutes of Health announced it was considering anonymity in the review of grant applications. Ge Wang, adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at theVirginia Tech -- Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences, and seven of his colleagues do not believe this action is necessary if taken to counteract a charge of "racial bias." For Wang, their study was based on the most recent controversy that began with a report, "Race, ethnicity, and NIH research awards," that appeared in the Aug. 19, 2011, issue of Science. In this paper published by D. K. Ginther of the University of Kansas as the primary author, the economist stated that…
Researchers are improving the performance of technologies ranging from medical CT scanners to digital cameras using a system of models to extract specific information from huge collections of data and then reconstructing images like a jigsaw puzzle. The new approach is called model-based iterative reconstruction, or MBIR. "It's more-or-less how humans solve problems by trial and error, assessing probability and discarding extraneous information," said Charles Bouman, Purdue University's Michael and Katherine Birck Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a professor of biomedical engineering. MBIR has been used in a new CT scanning technology that exposes patients to one-fourth the radiation of conventional CT scanners. In consumer electronics, a new camera has been introduced that allows the user to focus…
FEI’s Visualization Sciences Group (VSG) and North Star Imaging (NSI) announce the signing of an OEM partnership agreement between the two companies. North Star Imaging will begin offering VSG’s Avizo® Fire high-end 3D visualization and analysis software as an integrated component with their 3D X-ray scanning solutions. NSI’s high speed, high resolution 3D Computed Tomography X-ray imaging systems will be enhanced by now also offering VSG’s ability to supply fast analysis and modeling of the collected data. This combination provides the best in-class solutions by both companies and facilitates a wide range of research & development applications while improving in-line production testing. According to Abigail D. Lape, Research Scientist in Global Food Research group at Cargill, “The collaboration ensures Cargill’s…
Purdue University researchers have received a five-year $14.5 million National Science Foundation grant to expand its widely used nanoHUB.org online science and engineering gateway. The Purdue-led Cyber Platform, a part of the Network for Computational Nanotechnology (NCN), will assist researchers across the globe by developing a virtual society that shares simulation software, data and other innovative content to provide engineers and scientists with the fundamental knowledge required to advance nanoscience into nanotechnology. "Thousands of times a day the leading researchers 'come' to Purdue through the globally unique tool of nanoHUB," Purdue President Mitch Daniels said Tuesday (Feb. 5) in announcing the grant. "The new NSF investment is an affirmation of the brilliance of nanoHUB's Purdue creators and of its worldwide…
The U.S. Energy Information Administration today launched its interactive electricity data browser that makes it easier for the public to access all types of data about U.S. electricity, including electricity generation, retail sales, average electricity prices, and the cost and quality of fossil fuels used to generate electricity. Users can retrieve electricity information at the national level, narrow their search to a specific state, or dig down for data on any local power plant that has at least one megawatt of generating capacity. Before, users had to look online at separate EIA electricity reports or databases to find specific data, especially trends in data over time. Now, up to 10 years of current and historical annual or monthly electricity data…
