THIS YEARS STORIES

A Japanese delegation of Fujitsu Limited led by Chairman Michiyoshi Mazuka visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, Jan. 16, for further understanding of both profiles and advantages, expecting to jointly elevate the development in computational biology, bioinformatics, and medical care. A consensus had been reached when Fujitsu Taiwan LTD. and NCKU signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), in 2012, for building a platform of genomics and bioinformatics research. This visit of Mazuka’s delegation had further straightened the partnership. NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung , a renowned hydraulic expert, welcomed the delegation, “NCKU and Fujitsu are expecting to jointly carry out research projects of disaster prevention with disciplinary efforts and advanced technology.” “Fujitsu Limited as Asia’s No.1 ICT solutions provider…
In a speech today, Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts, has announced £35M funding to boost research in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy. The funding, from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), will create networks and collaborative research between academia and industry offering a channel for sustainable economic growth for the UK and new 'green collar' jobs. The funding will create two new schemes to develop the UK's industrial biotechnology and bioenergy research community (including biopharmaceuticals and biorenewables) and to support the translation of new ideas into commercial applications. The new schemes form the central part of BBSRC's strategy to support the development of industrial biotechnology and bioenergy (IBBE) as a key component of the UK bioeconomy. Minister…
Every film and TV program ever created - in a teacup Researchers at the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) have created a way to store data in the form of DNA – a material that lasts for tens of thousands of years. The new method, published today in the journal Nature, makes it possible to store at least 100 million hours of high-definition video in about a cup of DNA. There is a lot of digital information in the world – about three zettabytes' worth (that's 3000 billion billion bytes) – and the constant influx of new digital content poses a real challenge for archivists. Hard disks are expensive and require a constant supply of electricity, while even the best 'no-power'…
New method is first to predict brain cancer outcome and quickly show if therapy is effective The critical question shortly after a brain cancer patient starts treatment: how well is it working? But there hasn't been a good way to gauge that. Now Northwestern Medicine researchers have developed a new method -- similar to forecasting storms with supercomputer models -- to predict an individual patient's brain tumor growth. This growth forecast will enable physicians to rapidly identify how well the tumor is responding to a particular therapy. The approach allows a quick pivot to a new therapy in a critical time window if the current one isn't effective. The study is based on 33 patients with glioblastoma, the most common…
