A virtual heart, developed at The University of Manchester, is revealing new information about one of the world's most common heart conditions.Researchers at the School of Physics and Astronomy used cutting edge technology to build an advanced supercomputational model of an anatomically correct sheep's heart. It was made by taking a series of very thin slices of the heart, imaging them in 2D and then using a supercomputer program to render them into a 3D model. The reconstruction includes details of the complex fibre structure of the tissue, and the segmentation of the upper chambers of the heart into known distinctive atrial regions. Single-cell models that take into account information about the electrical activity in different atrial parts of regions the…
Import, Transform and Deliver Custom Cloud Images with the OS Catalog; CentOS Server Images Featured This Week CohesiveFT has announced the availability of the OS Catalog on their two Server3 SaaS implementations. The OS Catalog is part of an image management system based on CohesiveFT's Server3 offering, providing cloud users with improved import experience and expanded operating system support. The OS Catalog is available both in IBM SCE on Smart.ElasticServer.com and AWS EC2 along with many other clouds onbeta.ElasticServer.com. Users can choose to build and customize their own VM starting with the available base OS images and add custom software component stacks. Cloud and software providers can offer cloud users improved import experience and expanded operating system support. Currently, cloud…
High-Performance Expected to Help Researchers Advance Energy ResearchOne of the world’s fastest, most energy-efficient supercomputers – expected to help energy researchers discover new materials, optimize designs and better predict operational characteristics – is up and running at the Office of Fossil Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, W.Va.The High-Performance Computer for Energy and the Environment (HPCEE) is not only on the TOP500 list as one of the top 100 supercomputers in the world—currently ranked at 55—but it is also one of the most energy efficient for its size.Housed at NETL’s Simulation-Based Engineering User Center, the supercomputer is a 503 TFlops (trillion floating-point operations per second) computer that enables the simulation of phenomena that are difficult or impossible to…
Altair today introduced PBS Professional 12.0, the latest version of its globally popular workload management and job scheduling solution for supercomputing, with exceptional new features that dramatically speed scheduling and boost utilization and agility. “PBS Professional 12.0 advances Altair’s technology significantly farther along the road to exascale systems, in which clusters will grow from today’s tens of thousands of processors to a million or more,” said Bill Nitzberg, chief technology officer for PBS Works at Altair. “Our latest release is faster, is more robust and offers better utilization. The HPC landscape is changing faster than ever around Clouds, Green, GPUs, and co-processors making customization key. Our new plug-ins provide the agility needed to keep up with this ever changing landscape.”…
