Integration of STEC ZeusIOPS SSDs With LSI Midrange System Enables New Tier of Storage Performance, Reduced Power Consumption and Increased Overall System Efficiency STEC today announced that STEC's enterprise-class ZeusIOPS Solid State Drives (SSDs) are now available for the LSI Engenio 7900 Storage System. The integration of STEC's SSDs with the Engenio 7900 is designed to provide midrange storage customers facing unprecedented data growth, rising energy costs and tighter budgets with a new tier of performance, reduced power consumption and increased overall system efficiency. "Our vision of bringing high-performance technology to the forefront of midrange storage systems is greatly reflected within this shared endeavor with LSI," said Manouch Moshayedi, chairman and chief executive officer of STEC. "Through our close collaboration…
Investigators at Burnham Institute for Medical Research (Burnham), University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF) and other institutions have constructed a complete model, including three dimensional protein structures, of the central metabolic network of the bacterium Thermotoga maritima (T. maritima). This is the first time scientists have developed such a comprehensive model of a metabolic network overlaid with an atomic resolution of network proteins. The analysis of the model, among others, highlights the important role of a small number of essential protein shapes, lending new insights into the evolution of protein networks and the functions within these networks. The study was published in the journal Science…
Absoft has announced general availability of the new Absoft Pro Fortran v11.0 for x86 and x64 based Linux systems. Release 11.0 is the first of Absoft’s high-performance, auto-parallelizing Fortrans to include support for OpenMP multi-core parallel programming standards and optimizations for AMD’s six-core Opteron (Istanbul) and Intel Xeon (Nehalem) processors. Absoft’s Fx3 graphical debugger has also been upgraded to support OpenMP threads and the Absoft multi-platform IDE, has added an OpenMP control feature among other improvements. Supported environments include RHEL 8, SuSE 3, Ubuntu, Fedora and Mandrake. Pricing starts at $599. Absoft Pro Fortran v11.0 also adds a new scheduler, which has demonstrated performance increases of up to 10% in resource-constrained environments. SSE4*/4.2 instructions are supported and Absoft states that…
Is 1 of 2 U of T-based projects to receive NSRC funding injection A nanomedicine research group led by a University of Toronto chemist has received a $5-million grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), giving them the green light to develop faster ways of detecting leukemia and lung cancer cells. "This funding will lead to healthier lives for Canadians," says Gilbert Walker, a professor in U of T's Department of Chemistry and primary investigator of the Network for Bioplasmonic Systems (BiopSys). "Our first goal is to determine the presence of lung cancer at an earlier stage than is currently possible, which will permit faster screening. Our second goal is to develop similar devices for…
The CESGA-UNEX-UVIGO team has won in the Computationally Intensive Applications category of the “ITANIUM INNOVATION ALLIANCE AWARDS 09”. This award is given by the Itanium Solutions Alliance in recognition of remarkable use of supercomputers equipped with Intel Itanium processors. The awards were presented yesterday in a ceremony held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Francisco, California. These awards recognise, in three different categories, (“Mission-Critical Data”, “Data Center Modernization” and “Computationally Intensive Applications”), the excellence of high-performance computing jobs performed on Itanium-based systems. The criteria for the selection of jobs submitted from 14 countries and five continents are primarily based on the difficulty of the computational challenge presented, the results produced and originality of the proposal. In particular, the category in…
