The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are using random patterns of speckles painted on metal connectors for bridges to better understand how stress and strain could lead to their failure, and possibly, a tragic collapse such as the one in Minneapolis, Minn., in August 2007.
