LSTC, Penguin Deliver LS-DYNA On-Demand

Leading Finite Element Solver Now Available Through Penguin on Demand (POD) for HPC “in the Cloud”

Penguin Computing and Livermore Software Technology Corp. (LSTC), have announced that the two companies have partnered to make LS-DYNA, the leading general purpose finite element solver, available through Penguin on Demand (POD). Penguin’s POD provides optimized compute resources designed specifically for HPC that are accessible on-demand “in the cloud.”

“Penguin Computing is one of the very few HPC vendors that provide a complete offering of integrated systems, management software and on-demand services. With a significant joint customer base and Penguin’s high level of HPC expertise, it was only natural for us to partner with Penguin to deliver a true on-demand offering that provides maximum flexibility for our LS-DYNA users. Through this partnership, we already have active LS-DYNA customers on Penguin’s POD, and we look forward to working closely with Penguin to support many more,” said Wayne Mindle, senior engineer, Technical Sales and Marketing at LSTC.

Through POD, users can access a Linux cluster infrastructure that is optimized for HPC workloads. Applications run on POD without the negative performance impact due to the virtualization layers most “cloud” offerings are based on. POD also features high performance interconnects and high performance parallel file systems, making this environment a perfect fit for the highly scalable application LS-DYNA.

The recent agreement between Penguin Computing and LSTC makes it very easy and cost effective for organizations to move their LS-DYNA workload to POD, to, for example, off-load peak workload or to run large-scale simulations that cannot be processed in-house. The use of LS-DYNA on POD is completely transparent and LS-DYNA users no longer have to be concerned with application installation and licensing. With POD hosting, LS-DYNA-licensed users only pay for compute time actually used. LS-DYNA license fees are incurred based on the number of cores used over a 24-hour period. LSTC will provide full application support for LS-DYNA on POD.

“LS-DYNA is one of the most advanced multi-physics simulation software packages on the market, and POD provides a great execution environment for LS-DYNA. Our users will appreciate the fact that Penguin can provide compute cycles as well as LS-DYNA application licenses, as they are needed, without having to worry about how to link the on-demand infrastructure to an already existing license pool,” said Tom Coull, General Manager for Software and Services at Penguin Computing.
