MySQL Database Available for New AMD64 Architecture

SEATTLE--MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that the MySQL(R) database has been optimized for the AMD Opteron(TM) processor, the flagship for AMD's new AMD64 technology platform. MySQL for Linux running on the AMD Opteron processor is now available at the MySQL AB Web site at www.mysql.com/downloads. AMD's new 64-bit platform, the AMD64 architecture, is designed to be a new class of high-performance computing that will enable the technology industry to build a unified 64-bit computing infrastructure that is fully compatible with the ubiquitous x86 technology. The AMD Opteron processor for servers and workstations is the first milestone in establishing this new class of computing. The availability of MySQL on AMD Opteron processors brings the performance and cost advantages of the MySQL database to software developers who are creating applications for AMD's new computing platform, thus extending the large MySQL development community and adding to the growing list of 64-bit MySQL-based applications. "Thirty-two- or 64-bit software that is optimized for speed, including the MySQL database, can take full advantage of the 64-bit processing capabilities of the AMD Opteron processor," said Rich Heye, vice president and general manager of AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit. "The MySQL database with Linux and the AMD Opteron processor deliver high performance computing power and the scalability that customers require to run the enterprise and stay competitive." The MySQL database is a high-performance relational database management system for Web site and business application development and deployment. With a streamlined but functionally-rich feature set, the MySQL database maximizes speed, stability and ease of deployment. MySQL is available on all major Linux distributions, as well as Unix, Mac OS and Windows operating systems. The optimization of MySQL for the AMD Opteron processor further extends the reach of MySQL's database solution. "MySQL on the AMD64 platform is a good choice for software developers who have large applications where address space has typically been a bottleneck. With the Opteron processor, these applications can grow virtually without limit and still maintain high performance and stability," commented Michael (Monty) Widenius, MySQL AB CTO and co-founder.
