France's CEA Tera10 includes 500 Emulex LP11000 4 Gb/s HBAs
Emulex Corporation today announced that Bull has selected Emulex 4 Gb/s HBAs for use as part of Bull's cluster of NovaScale SMP servers to power "Tera10," the most powerful supercomputer in Europe and one of the fastest supercomputers worldwide. With over 60 teraflops of computing power, a cluster of 544 Bull NovaScale servers serves as the heart of the new CEA (French Atomic Energy Authority) Tera10 system. As a result, the CEA can now benefit from the high-performance and reliability provided by Emulex's 4 Gb/s storage connectivity solutions while using Bull's high-powered servers for some of the most demanding computing applications ever performed. Nearly 500 Emulex LP11000 4 Gb/s HBAs are used to connect the servers within the Tera10 supercomputer to the storage systems. Tera10 requires an enormous amount of storage capacity and throughput speed. And with Emulex's new LP11000 series of 4 Gb/s HBAs as an integral part of the system, Tera10 processing power will be preserved during the offload of data to the storage systems. The configuration includes 54 NovaScale I/O servers housing over a petabyte of data and two additional NovaScale servers for file system meta data. Tera10 will house Europe's most powerful storage environments. In addition, Tera10 will operate the Bull HPC platform that includes the Linux operating system and "Lustre," the global and parallel file system. This platform is based on open source integrated and optimized by Bull's HPC competence center in Echirolles, France. "This design win is yet another proof point of our leadership in bringing 4 Gb/s FC HBAs to market to help enable the deployment of one of the largest and fastest supercomputers in the world," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide market at Emulex Corporation. "Emulex's 4 Gb/s offering matches the extreme reliability and performance requirements that the CEA will require for their mission-critical applications." "Emulex's 4 Gb/s HBAs are the perfect storage connectivity solution to complement the Bull Tera10 supercomputing environment, providing the highest performance and reliability for this mission-critical application," said Jean-Francois Lavignon, Bull HPC director. "We are very pleased to offer CEA the best-of-breed in storage solutions to meet their stringent requirements." The Emulex 4 Gb/s family of HBAs, including the LP11000 and LPe11000, offer twice the speed and performance of 2 Gb/s host bus adapters, while delivering seamless backwards compatibility with existing 2 Gb/s and 1 Gb/s SANs. In addition, the LP11000 and LPe11000 are available for use within PCI-X 2.0 and PCI Express systems, which are new bus architectures that increase bandwidth performance. The Emulex family of HBAs offers firmware-based architecture and operating system driver compatibility across Emulex's entire HBA product line, which provides customers with a simplified upgrade path, reduced management complexities and also ensures a lower total cost of ownership. Emulex also offers a robust suite of HBA installation and management tools, including Enterprise AutoPilot Installer, EZPilot and HBAnyware, which incorporates driver-based technology to enable complete management and upgrades of Emulex HBAs anywhere in a SAN from a single console.
