Bob Bishop to Receive Honorary Doctorate From University of Queensland
Bob Bishop, distinguished Australian computing science expert and the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Silicon Graphics, will receive a Doctor of Science honoris causa at a University of Queensland graduation ceremony on December 15. Mr. Bishop is one of seven prominent Australians who will receive honorary doctorates from the University of Queensland. Mr. Bishop's distinguished career in computing science spans four decades, commencing in 1964 when he worked as a scientist with Ultrasound and NMR in Australia. Mr. Bishop held senior management positions with Apollo Computer Incorporated and Digital Equipment Corporation before joining SGI in 1986 as founding president of SGI's World Trade Corporation, and in 1999 was appointed to his current position as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. SGI is a leading provider of high-performance computing, visualization and storage solutions for technical and creative professionals. SGI systems are used in the design and construction of safer cars and airplanes, discovering new medications, predicting weather, for digital content creation and digital broadcasting or mission-critical support for government and defense. Mr. Bishop holds a Bachelor of Science degree with first-class honors in mathematical physics from The University of Adelaide and a Master of Science from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. Mr. Bishop will receive his Honorary Doctorate at the graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Engineering, Physical Sciences & Architecture at 11 a.m., December 15, at the UQ Centre, St Lucia Campus. Other recipients include: -- Former Ipswich City Council Mayor John Nugent at the graduation ceremonies for the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, at the Ipswich Civic Hall. -- Renowned painter and Archibald Prize winner Ray Crooke, AM, and former National Art Gallery Director Betty Churcher, AO at the graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Arts at the UQ Centre, St Lucia campus. -- Chairman of Westpac and Deputy Chairman of Rio Tinto, Leon Davis, AO, at the graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at the UQ Centre, St Lucia campus. -- Queensland Supreme Court Judge, The Honorable Justice Bruce McPherson CBE, at the graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at the UQ Centre, St Lucia campus. -- Acclaimed playwright, David Williamson, AO at the graduation ceremony for Faculty of Arts, at the UQ Centre, St Lucia Campus.
