NERSC chooses Allinea's distributed debugging tool - DDT

Allinea Software, an innovative tools company based in Warwick (UK), today announced that the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has chosen Allinea’s Distributed Debugging Tool (DDT) as the scalable parallel debugger for their new Cray XT4 supercomputer installed at DOE’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). “With nearly 20,000 cores, our new XT4 system – named ‘Franklin’ – will allow researchers to tackle the most challenging problems in science by conducting more frequent and increasingly detailed simulations and analyses of massive sets of data. However, NERSC users will face the challenge of developing and running parallel applications that span much larger numbers of processors than ever before. Given this, it was imperative that we offered our users a comprehensive application development and debugging environment on this system,” said Jonathan Carter, Group Leader for User Services at NERSC. “Allinea DDT was chosen as the debugging solution for Franklin because its feature set and price/performance was determined by NERSC’s comprehensive evaluation criteria to offer the most benefit to our users. During the last few weeks of rigorous acceptance testing, including both capability and scalability tests using real NERSC applications, we have been very impressed with DDT. Allinea ‘s technical team has also been very responsive as we put DDT into production use.” Allinea DDT is well-known for its ease-of-use and for its comprehensive list of features for multi-threaded and multi-process code. Following its introduction in 2003, the product quickly gained an extensive user-base, particularly in Europe where Allinea is headquartered. DDT is now installed on the majority of Europe’s largest supercomputers, and following the opening of its US subsidiary in 2007, the company has seen the adoption of DDT by a number of key North American customers. The latest version of DDT brings new scalability features, as well as support for high-end platforms such as the Cray XT4 and XT5, which strengthen its position as the premium multi-platform parallel debugging solution. “We are very pleased and honoured that NERSC chose DDT for Franklin,” said Jacques Philouze, Vice President Sales & Marketing of Allinea. “It is recognition of both our technology and the high levels of user and sales support that we aspire to. We look forward to a continued collaboration with NERSC in order to further improve DDT’s features and scalability so as to meet the demands of tomorrow’s very highly parallel applications” DDT is compatible with Solaris, Aix, and Linux operating systems, on X86, X86-64, IA64, Power, UltraSparc and Cell processors. It is also compatible with compilers from Sun, Pathscale, Absoft, The Portland Group, IBM, Intel and GNU, as well as all known MPI distributions. Allinea Software will be exhibiting at the Supercomputing Conference (SC2007) in Nevada, USA from November 12 -16, 2007.
