A major project brings together Finnish industry, research for quantum technology development

A new research project has been launched to accelerate the progress of Finnish quantum technology. The QuTI project, coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, will develop new components, manufacturing and testing solutions, and algorithms for the needs of quantum technology. The QuTI consortium, partly financed by Business Finland, consists of 12 partners and has a total budget of around EUR 10 million.

Quantum technology is developing into a wide field in the industry. This quantum wave is motivated by the unprecedented performance improvements and paradigm shifts that the utilization of quantum phenomena can provide for computing, communication, and sensing applications. The Quantum Technologies Industrial (QuTI) ecosystem project, coordinated by VTT, brings together the expertise of Finnish industry and research organizations to find new quantum technology solutions.

The QuTI project covers the full value chain of the quantum industry from materials and hardware to software and system-level solutions. The project involves 12 organizations: the research partners are VTT, Aalto University, Tampere University, and CSC – IT Center for Science, and the industrial partners are Bluefors, Afore, Picosun, IQM Quantum Computers, Rockley Photonics, Quantastica, Saab, and Vexlum.

“Quantum technology is a multidisciplinary and rapidly advancing field. The QuTI consortium provides an ideal starting point for strengthening the international competitiveness of Finnish technology and industry in this fast-growing field,” says QuTI project’s coordinator, Professor Mika Prunnila from VTT.

The quantum computing, communication, and sensing devices to be developed in the QuTI project are largely based on expertise in microsystems, photonics, electronics, and cryogenics. The project develops customized software and algorithms hand in hand with the hardware, strengthening the Finnish quantum computing infrastructure. In addition, new tools will be created for quantum technology product development that will serve the needs of the QuTI project as well as the entire field of quantum technology.

The three-year QuTI project will be implemented as a jointly funded project that is partly financed by Business Finland (EUR 5.6 million) the total budget being about EUR 10 million.

Cleanrooms are a prerequisite for quantum technology research and business

Like computer microprocessors, the fabrication of quantum technology components requires a cleanroom environment. The Micronova cleanroom facility in Espoo, Finland, operated jointly by VTT and Aalto University,  enables applied research and small-scale commercial manufacturing of quantum microsystems for the needs of quantum computing, communication, and sensing. Micronova, part of the national Otanano research infrastructure, plays a significant role in both the QuTI project and quantum technology R&D in Finland. QuTI will also utilize the complementary cleanroom of Tampere University focusing on optoelectronics fabrication.

Woolpert hires NG911 tech expert Brooks Lastinger as geospatial project manager

Geospatial Project Manager Brooks Lastinger, GISP, has been hired by Woolpert to help lead the firm’s Next Generation 911 (NG911) efforts with state and local government clients. Lastinger has more than 17 years of experience in local government GIS, with a focus on geospatial data integration for addressing, centerline management, and NG911 technology and applications.  

Before Woolpert, Lastinger served as the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) NG911 lead for New York City, where he helped convert the city’s GIS data model into a NENA format to elevate public safety and emergency management throughout the five boroughs. Through this role and previous county 911 GIS positions in South Carolina and Georgia, Lastinger has become adept at managing, implementing, and integrating GIS for computer-aided dispatch (CAD), asset management and permitting, and licensing and land-use systems, while supporting location-based data integration for improving NG911 capabilities. 

Lastinger stressed the importance of proper NG911 implementation, which he said hinges on clear communication from address and street name assignment to dispatch. He said, once fully developed, NG911 will enable emergency calls to be instantly transferred to the correct public safety answering point (PSAP), providing appropriate local emergency service recommendations whether the call is via text, video, or voice. 

“Gone will be the days of a 911 dispatcher frantically trying to determine the correct PSAP to transfer a call to because a caller was outside their jurisdiction,” he said. “PSAP directors also will have a reliable, statewide and high-quality source of GIS data for their CAD systems, permanently removing one of their biggest worries, aside from battling aging call handling equipment and staffing.” 

Lastinger said Woolpert’s decades of experience supporting the geospatial and engineering needs of state and local governments across the country give it an advantage in NG911 GIS implementation. 

“Woolpert has a comprehensive understanding of location-based data workflows specific to municipalities, and this is supported by its global mapping capabilities and Google partnership,” Lastinger said. “I have known about Woolpert since college, where I passed my Fundamentals in Land Surveying exam. I am excited to join this outstanding geospatial team and provide unique insight into the statewide aggregation of datasets to advance NG911 GIS implementation.”

Oracle buys Cerner

Oracle and Cerner have announced an agreement for Oracle to acquire Cerner through an all-cash tender offer for $95.00 per share, or approximately $28.3 billion in equity value.
